The Burren

The Burren is an area of incredible beauty. This is the most extensive limescale region in Ireland. It is scarce in soil, man has settled here since the Stone Age, evidence of his habitation & tombs are all around you e .g massive dolmens, wedge tombs & stone forth called cahers (the homestead of farmers long ago) survive in various stages of preservation. Churches & castles indicate later period of settlement.

The Burren is famous for its rare plant life, limestone loving plants such as the foxgloves & rock roses grow there & rock microclimates also nurture plants found in the Artic, Alpine & Mediterranean regions.
